Thinktank Science Garden
Where Scientastic Things Happen
Thinktank Science Garden opened in Summer 2012. This outdoor discovery space is packed with surprises and fun activities for the whole family! And you’ll find out all about science and engineering along the way.
Visitors of all ages can get ‘bodies on’ with exciting and inventive exhibits including an eight metre high clanging ‘Terminus’ machine and a giant human-sized hamster wheel that has a top speed of 30 revolutions per minute.
The interactive outdoor exploration space offers an adventurous and entertaining day out for all the family, bringing themes of engineering, mechanics and transportation to life through 42 hands-on exhibits and fun zones.
The Science Garden is the first project of this type in the UK and one of only a few in the world, with specially designed features such as the first ever logic-defying square wheeled people wagon, a giant weighing station and a ‘pulley me up’ exhibit.
The Science Garden is full of giant exhibits for all the family. Fun zones in the Science Garden include:
Energise - Harness renewable energy to power a mechanical theatre - which turbine or solar panel will you choose?
Mechanise - Use a host of intriguing machines to feed the 8m high 'Terminus' machine - can you get enough for an explosion of dancing balls and whistles?
Mobilise - How does it feel riding on a wagon with square wheels on a bumpy road? Find out!
In addition to these interactive exhibits there is an outdoor classroom – Garden Arena, where shows and workshops for schools can take place. The Science Garden is unique to the UK, building on the success of outdoor science play areas around the world, such as those at in the New York Hall of Science and Danfoss Universe in Denmark.
