Thinktank offers a range events and activities specifically aimed at adults. Whether you are looking for an informal event in a pub or a reminiscence session in your local group venue, we have a variety of events that might just suit your needs.
Cafes Scientifique are informal and lively discussion events around contemporary science issues that take place in local bars, cafes and pubs. Taking place on the first Tuesday of every month, we feature a variety of local scientists and engineers, talking about their work and how it affects the average person in the street. Always fun, sometimes controversial, these events are a great way to get to the heart of the matter.
The Newcomen Society is the world's oldest learned society devoted to the study of the history of engineering and technology. The Society is based in London and is concerned with all branches of engineering: civil, mechanical, electrical, structural, aeronautical, marine, chemical and manufacturing.
The Midlands Branch of the Newcomen Society holds its series of Winter evening Lectures in the Thinktank Theatre.
The Planet in Our Hands: Responding to climate change
Sir Mark Walport is the new Chief Science Adviser to the UK Government. He has a background in immunology and now turns his attentions to the most pressing issue we face as a global society: our climate. In this series of talks across the UK he discusses with public audiences what the science tells us, and asks what should we, as a developed nation, do in response?
Sir Mark will be joined by Prof Alice Roberts, Chair of Public Engagement in Science at the University of Birmingham. Alice is a clinical anatomist and has presented a range of programmes on BBC2 including The Incredible Human Journey, Origins of Us, and Prehistoric Autopsy. Her latest series, Ice Age Giants, airs on BBC2 this spring.
This event has been made possible by the Association for Science and Discovery Centres (ASDC) working in partnership with the Government Office for Science.
